Limewire LimeWire is a file sharing program running on the Gnutella Network. It is open standard software running on an open protocol, free for the public to use. Mozilla/Firefox Plugins Plugins help with displaying extra content in your browser, such as movies. Some plugins can be easily installed when Mozilla or Firefox prompt you, but here's some you'll want to install yourself. Flash: You can just find this in synaptic by searching for "flashplayer-mozilla" and then installing that package. Acrobat Reader: You can just find this in synaptic by searching for "acroread-plugin" and then installing that package. Java: After installing Java, you'll want to do this from a CLI: sudo ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ sudo ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/ Note that the version number behind jre might be different.

Realplayer RealPlayer 10 supports RealAudio, RealVideo 10, MP3, Ogg Vorbis and Theora, H263, AAC and more. http://www.real.com/ [37] Go to http://www.real.com/linux/ [38] Click the "Download RealPlayer" button. Open up a terminal window, cd to where you downloaded it to, and type in the following: sudo ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin Follow the instructions, choose system-wide if asked. RealPlayer is now installed (as well as the Firefox plugin), and should show up in the Multimedia menu.


w32codecs w32codecs are some codecs that allow you to better view Windows media files such as WMV and ASF. You can just find this in synaptic by searching for "w32codecs" and then installing that package.


MPlayer MPlayer is a movie player for Linux (runs on many other Unices, and non-x86 CPUs, see the documentation). It plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs. Xine xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from local disk drives, and displays multimedia streamed over the Internet. Basic Development Tools Basic development tools will come in handy if you ever need to compile something from source. You can just find this in synaptic by searching for "build-essential" and then installing that package.

QTParted QTParted is a Partition Magic clone written in C++ using the Qt toolkit. http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/ [46] You can just find this in synaptic by searching for "qtparted" and then installing that package.


Firestarter Firewall With Firestarter you will have a firewall up and running in minutes. You will then want to remove the existing menu entry in the System menu and replace it instead with one where the command is: gsudo /usr/sbin/firestarter

Smoother Fonts This will install some extra anti-aliasing to your fonts making them look smoother. You'll probably want to avoid this if your system is on the slower side. Detailed instructions can be found here [50].


Sunbird The Sunbird Project is a redesign of the Mozilla Calendar [51] component. The goal is to produce a cross platform standalone calendar application based on Mozilla's XUL user interface language. At the moment the Sunbird name is a project name. gdesklets gDesklets provides an advanced architecture for desktop applets -- tiny displays sitting on your desktop in a symbiotic relationship of eye candy and usefulness. http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ [54] gdesklets is some really cool looking eyecandy. The problem is that it's very difficult to install and tricky to get working. Luckily there is a package in synaptic if you search for "gdesklets". gdeskcal gDeskCal is a cute little eye-candy calendar for your desktop.
